Hands On: Alcatel's First 2-in-1 Windows Tablet, the Plus 10

BARCELONA—Alcatel'southward launch of the Idol 4 and 4S yesterday came with one big surprise—the unveiling of a ii-in-1 Windows x tablet with a keyboard.

MWC Bug Art There's quite a lot of these device from companies like Acer and Asus, but this is Alcatel's first serious Windows 10 tablet. The company has lofty aspirations to be the fifth-largest smartphone and tablet maker in the world by the end of the twelvemonth, and the Plus x is a cardinal role of that plan. My time with the Plus ten was brief, only information technology feels similar a standard convertible with a few extra bells and whistles.

Plus 10 Tablet
The tablet is entirely plastic, though it has a imitation-metallic look. That's not to say the build quality is poor, merely this isn't a premium offer. There'due south a flap on the side that tin can take a microSD carte, which is what yous'll need if yous want to use this as a laptop.

Overall dimensions are 10.21 by vi.15 by 0.33 inches (HWD). The tablet role of the Plus 10 consists of a 10.1-inch ane,280-past-800 brandish with 149 pixels per inch. It seems fairly clear and bright, though I wouldn't necessarily describe information technology as crisp. At that place are front-facing stereo speakers along the side and Alcatel envisions you beingness able to use them for content consumption when you lot opposite the tablet and put it into the keyboard attachment as a stand. The bigger problem is that one time the tablet docks into the keyboard, it isn't adjustable. That seems like a pretty large downside if you want viewing bending options.

The tablet is powered by an Intel Atom Z8350 quad-core processor, clocked at one.92GHz with 2GB of RAM. It comes with a respectable 32GB of internal storage and has microSD carte support for 64GB cards. This is going to limit your ability to use the Plus ten as a full laptop; it's non much storage for saving files or retentivity for multitasking. Information technology might be a different story if you lot could use a 200GB SanDisk card.

In that location'south also a 5-megapixel rear-facing photographic camera, which I can't imagine that you'll make much use of, and a 2-megapixel front-facing photographic camera.

The tablet past itself has a 5,830mAh bombardment and the keyboard has an boosted 2,580mAh bombardment. Alcatel predicts that you lot should be able to get 8 hours of usage, or a full workday with no problem.

Plus 10 Keyboard
When detached from its keyboard section, the slate functions like your standard tablet, connecting to Wi-Fi.  The keyboard, however, supports LTE connectivity so when connected, you tin can get data connectivity on the go or the ability to utilize it as a hotspot for upwards to xv other devices.

As mentioned before, there's an additional battery on the keyboard. It as well holds the micro USB, a total-size USB, and a microHDMI, potentially allowing yous to connect it to a mouse and brandish to utilize as a desktop.

Detaching and reattaching the keyboard is piece of cake enough, just the keyboard itself didn't print. It shouldn't surprise you that with a 10.1-inch device, the keyboard is pocket-size and cramped; working on it for hours could exist a pain. That said, it's easy to comport on the go, so it's a handy way to get work done while traveling.

Availability and Cost
The Plus 10 volition be bachelor in June in various markets, including Due north America. It will come in metallic argent, matte white, matte volcano black, or a grayness leather finish. Toll was non appear.

The overall blueprint and functionality of the Plus ten is not fundamentally different from the company's Pop x Android tablet, which besides has a keyboard attachment. Just Windows x does give the Plus 10 an edge in getting work washed. Alcatel has tricked information technology out with some cellular connectivity and a adept range of ports (for a tablet). But nosotros'll have to reserve judgment until our full review, so stay tuned for that.
